#7 - Podcast with Kimberley McAdams
In this episode of Brash Words, I share a personal story that I find difficult to discuss. In late 1998, after two years in the workforce, I suffered burnout. At the time, I spent the better part of 70 to 80 hours a week at the office, not coming home and neglecting my health. Then one day, it all came crashing down. Early one morning, my wife found me at the bottom of the shower, sobbing like a child. I couldn't function, and it felt like my mind was retreating from all the things that I loved.
Luckily, my President and CEO had tremendous compassion and put me on the path to recovery. To get better, it took therapy, medication, and a drastic change in my lifestyle. What helped me was setting boundaries between my personal and professional life and admitting to a few things like my career does not define me, and it's ok to rest. I also became quite adept at recognizing trigger symptoms. The big one for me is lapsing in memory. That's when I know I'm in trouble.
The idea of rest has a certain stigma, especially in a society that so glorifies the daily grind and hustle. To help others change their mindset about rest, I recommend the book authored by Alex Soojung-Kim Pang and so appropriately titled Rest. Alex does a fantastic job explaining the benefits of taking time to rest and provides some great examples of how to recharge mentally.
My journey with burnout isn't over. I sometimes slip back into my bad habits, but luckily have a sound support system around me to keep me in check.
